Greek Caravan of Solidarity

The Greek Caravan of Solidarity is a non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization.

The idea for its creation was born when the clouds of war gathered in our region. When the civil war in Bosnia erupted in Sarajevo.

Its purpose was to transform the concerns, sensitivities and will to help – felt by our fellow citizens – into specific action. To help the innocent victims of war, and especially the children.

Thousands of our fellow citizens supported our efforts, put their trust in us, embraced us. The Caravan broadened its goals to include provision of help to victims of natural and other disasters. The Greek Caravan of Solidarity begun its journey carrying the trust and good wishes of thousands of our fellow citizens.

The sole source of income to the Greek Caravan of Solidarity are its friends, its donors, those who participate in its programs, and also organizations and unions which trust it.

Additional income is generated through the Greek charity shop, “Second Hand”, which offers gift, vinyl records, CDs, knickknacks, books, works of art, jewelry, etc. at very low prices and in mint condition. These items have been donated by our friends.

Despite the fact that the Greek Caravan of Solidarity is registered with the Hellenic International Development Co-operation Department “HELLENIC AID” of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it has NEVER received any financial assistance whatsoever from the budgets of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor from those of the European Union.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM?

How is the money I donate guaranteed to be used for the purpose I gave it?

Apart from urgent humanitarian actions, the main field of action of the Greek Caravan of Solidarity are the “financial adoption” programs, aimed at orphaned children who have lost on or both parents to war or natural disasters. These programs target specific areas (Bosnia, Yugoslavia, Kosovo, Palestine, Sri Lanka).

Full details of hundreds of children are kept at the offices of the Greek Caravan of Solidarity, including photographs, their family status, their address, death certificate(s) of their parent(s), etc.

Each donor can adopt financially one or more orphans, by undertaking to donate €30 a month for one year, either through a bank account or directly to the Caravan’s office.

The Greek Caravan of Solidarity undertakes the obligation to visit the program target area frequently and to deliver the money to the parent or the guardians of the orphaned child.
