Greek Caravan of Solidarity - ActivitiesThe Greek Caravan of Solidarity was founded in 1992 as an initiative of the then members of the European Parliament ALAVANOS ALEKOS, AVGERINOS PARASKEVAS and LAMBRIAS PANAYOTIS. After the latter’s passing, his place was taken by member of the European Parliament HADJIDAKIS KOSTIS. The Caravan’s activities commenced in 1993 from the then war-ridden Bosnia with the provision of first aid (food, medication) to non-combatant citizens. Since December 1995, the Caravan has promoted a humanitarian aid program, which provides on a monthly basis financial support to the orphaned children of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The program collects funds from donors, who volunteer to provide financial support – adoption – of one or more children, and delivers the money to the beneficiary, obtaining a signature as proof of receipt. Through the “financial adoption of orphaned children” program the Greek Caravan of Solidarity has since 1995 had an active involvement in war-ridden areas (Bosnia – Yugoslavia – Palestine), as well as areas hit by natural disasters (Sri Lanka). Apart from its basic program of “financial adoption” of orphaned children, the Greek Caravan of Solidarity: Planned and carried out in 1997 multiple successive humanitarian aid missions providing food, medication and hospital supplies to Albania (more than 25,000 personal rations were sent). Planned and carried out the delivery of medical supplies to the people of Sudan. Assisted Kurdish refugees in Greece by supplying food, clothing, sleeping bags and personal hygiene supplies. In Spring of 1999, during the bomb raids, it generaled to Belgrade, where it delivered food and medication to two hospitals and one orphanage. It has organized four blood donation sessions, to gather blood for the hospitals of Yugoslavia. After 1999’s earthquake in Athens, it assisted the homeless by providing tents and food, and also though an aid program for the elderly homeless in the Municipality of Menidi. It provided financial and administrative aid to help reunite Kurdish political refugees from Iraq, who lived in Greece, with their families in distant Australia. It offered gifts (toys and clothing) to the children of “Chadjikyriakio” orphanage. It offered food (in personal rations) to the Assyrian Community of Attica
